Featuring Liz Kiger

Tuesday September 15, 5:30 pm

Join us for a screening and discussion with film maker, musician, and Goucher Alum Liz Kiger.

Admission is free, but tickets are required.

About the film:

Brooklyn Telemann Chamber Society is proud to present Orfeo, the story of the demigod of music Orpheus who travels to the underworld to rescue his beloved wife who has recently died. Along the way, in exchange for taming the furies with his beautiful music, he makes a “deal with the devil” that he can bring Eurydice back to the mortal realm, as long as he does not look back at her.

An amalgamation of the various 1762 -1774 reform opera scores, this movie production of Gluck’s famous opera Orfeo features an overture of Kreisler’s rendition of the Gluck Melodie, an aria made from the instrumental ballet pieces, Naselli’s famous Eurydice aria sang by newly introduced character Persephone, lines from Dante’s Inferno spoken by the added characters of Hades and Charon, and a soprano lead portraying the title role. Filmed both outdoor and in our own modern abandoned hellscape on REDKomodo 6k, this operatic film is a huge undertaking for Brooklyn Telemann Chamber Society and director/producer Liz Kiger’s second film.

About the producer

Liz Kiger is a Turkish-American non-binary soprano vocalist, violinist, and opera director specializing in Baroque performance practice. They are the founder and director of the Brooklyn Telemann Chamber Society, one of the first primarily digital opera companies, focused on providing LGBTQIA emerging artists with opportunities reinterpreting Baroque operas as feature films, thereby bringing opera to new audiences through inclusion and accessibility. Their work with BTCS has been featured on numerous podcasts and most notably via @360ofopera and OperaWire.com.

They are currently Director in Residence for NJ’s Opera Atlantic where they directed a fully staged scenes production for Fall 2025’s Tales for a Starry Night. https://www.operaatlantic.org/... & 2024 They were in-production/post-production for the feature-length film Phèdre: Rameau’s Hippolyte et Aricie. They guest lectured at Yale University, Eastern Mennonite University, James Madison University, and Columbia on early music topics. Their vocals were featured in the Kravis Nightcap Series, a NY Philharmonic event, with Chromic Duo.

Their cinematic version of Gluck’s Orfeo, released 2021, won Best Female Director & Best Narrative Feature at the Anatolian Film Awards in Istanbul, Turkey.

Liz holds their MM in Classical Vocal Performance and a post graduate degree in Vocal Pedagogy from NYU. They received a BA in Music History and Vocal Performance from Goucher College.

She'll cover the legal picture (such as the $1.5 billion Anthropic settlement, now approved and moving toward payouts); the new suits against Google and Meta brought by publishers; and what the US Copyright Office actually says about copyrighting AI-assisted work. She looks at what publishers and agents are doing, from AI detection systems and manuscript summarization to AI narration, translation, and the animation and short-form video deals at HarperCollins. She'll also comment on industry flashpoints, including new research arguing that AI-assisted titles are diluting the market. Whatever your position on AI, you'll leave with a practical sense of what's happening in the current market and what questions remain unanswered (spoiler alert: mostly all of them).

Jane Friedman has spent her entire career working in the publishing industry, with a focus on business reporting and author education. Established in 2015, her newsletter The Bottom Line provides nuanced market intelligence to thousands of authors and industry professionals; her book, The Business of Being a Writer, Second Edition (The University of Chicago Press), is used as a classroom text by many writing and publishing degree programs and received a starred review from Library Journal.

Thomsen Lecture at Hyman Forum of the Athenaeum

The Rozel C. Thomsen Lecture featuring Sarah Isgur

The Roszel C. Thomsen Lectureship was established in 1979 in honor of the Honorable Roszel C. Thomsen, Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland, and Trustee Emeritus of Goucher College. The Lectureship is proud to announce this year’s featured speaker, Sarah Isgur.

Few possess Sarah Isgur’s deep level of insights and expertise when it comes to explaining transformative events in law and politics, and how society is being reshaped around them. Regarded among the nation’s most reputable and in-the-know political commentators, Isgur is a popular pundit and powerhouse media personality who is instantly recognizable from her appearances across the leading news outlets and author of the New York Times Bestselling book about the Supreme Court titled 'Last Branch Standing' with Penguin Random House. At The Dispatch, she serves as senior editor for the publication and host of its “Advisory Opinions” podcast, reaching an audience of hundreds of thousands of readers and listeners, and bringing them up to speed on what’s going on in politics, policy, and law with balanced insights and captivating color commentary. She also appears frequently as a contributor on ABC News and the network’s top-rated programs, including “Good Morning America” and “This Week” In addition, she is a regular guest on NPR’s “Left, Right, & Center” weekly politics show. She is also the editor of SCOTUSblog.

Isgur draws from her experiences working high-profile campaign roles for political heavyweights and contributing to all three branches of the federal government to bring a unique, insider perspective on the news of the day and how decisions in Washington really get made. She brings an unapologetic enthusiasm for politics and policy to the table and is incredibly skilled at articulating her insights and opinions on today’s hot-button issues with respect to all sides and in a way that invites further discourse and openness to alternate viewpoints. With her sharp wit and humor, she restores a level of fun to political discussions that has been missing in recent years and creates a comfortable setting to tackle the topics we’re often afraid to discuss. As she unwraps everything from headline news to important matters that are flying under the radar, she presents the facts in a way that enables audience members to easily grasp what’s really going on in our nation and how it will impact their organizations, as well as form their own opinions on where they stand on the issues that are keeping our leaders up at night.

Isgur previously served as the spokesperson for the Office of Public Affairs at the DOJ and, during her tenure, was also counsel to the deputy attorney general during the Russia Investigation. Before that, she was appointed deputy campaign manager for Carly Fiorina’s presidential campaign where she oversaw the day-to-day operations of the campaign, including the communications, policy, and digital teams. Previously, she worked for the Republican National Committee as deputy communications director from 2013 to 2015 and held roles in election day operations and the legal department for the Mitt Romney campaign. Among various other roles in politics and law, Isgur served as a fellow at Harvard Kennedy School’s Institute of Politics and a research fellow with Baylor College of Medicine’s Initiative on Neuroscience and the Law.

As one of the most authoritative voices on what’s going on inside the beltway, Isgur is focused on transcending partisan divides and finding common ground for the good of our nation.

There will be a book signing after the event with books available from the Ivy Bookshop.

Saturday, September 26, 7 p.m. | Merrick Hall

Goucher College is celebrating one of America's musical icons, Louis Armstrong. One of the single most influential musicians in American music, Armstrong left an imprint on American culture that still resonates today. Renowned trumpeter, vocalist and composer, Jumaane Smith brings his band to our stage to celebrate the life and music of Louis Armstrong. Jumaane has performed on 5 Grammy Award-winning records (selling more than 60 million copies), 2 Emmy Award-nominated TV performances, the Grammy Awards with Stevie Wonder, in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story (trumpet solo actor), at The White House, on the Today Show, Tonight Show, Oprah, Good Morning America, and American Idol.

Jumaane has toured to such world-class venues as Jazz At Lincoln Center, The Blue Note, Tanglewood, Birdland Jazz Club, Jazz Alley, Ronnie Scott’s, Vail Jazz Festival, Java Jazz Festival, North Star Festival, Southbank Centre, Marian’s Jazz Room, SF Jazz, Rochester International Jazz Festival, Catalina Island Jazz Festival, and many more.

Jumaane Smith’s critically-acclaimed debut album, “I Only Have Eyes For You,” featured special guests Michael Bublé, Jackie Evancho, and Naturally 7. His sophomore album, “When You’re Smiling,” was released to much praise in January 2020. His highly-anticipated third album, “Come on Home,” featuring Smith’s highly lauded soul-jazz and blues originals and backed by his stellar organ band, was released in August 2024 to wide critical acclaim, including a 4 Star review from DownBeat Magazine.

As a composer, Smith has scored music for films such as “Handsome Harry” (starring Steve Buscemi and Jamey Sheridan) and the documentary “Being in the World,” as well as for his own recordings and the interactive sheet music company Tomplay.
Thursday October 8, 7 pm

Merrick Hall

FABIOLA MENDEZ is a Puerto Rican cuatrista, singer, educator, and Emmy-nominated composer. Her artistic vision and original music focus on the exploration of her culture, her ancestry, and her identities.

Native to Caguas, PR, Fabiola began playing the cuatro, Puerto Rico’s national instrument, at the age of six. She got her early music trainings at the Antonio Paoli School of Music in Caguas and her Bachelor’s in Music from Berklee College of Music, where in 2018 she made history as the first graduate to play the Puerto Rican cuatro as principal instrument.

Fabiola’s mission has always been to share and celebrate the cuatro, folk music, and collective story-telling. In doing so, she’s had the honor of performing at venues such as the NPR Tiny Desk, Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC, Celebrity Series of Boston, New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Fred Rogers Productions, Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña, among many others. She has also collaborated with many local and international artists, including the Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra, Totó La Momposina, Pedro Capó, Andy Montañez, Danny Rivera, Chicago Philharmonic, and the Boston Landmarks Orchestra.

Her list of recordings include: Herencia Criolla (2009), Al Otro Lado Del Charco (2019), Afrorriqueña (2021), and Flora Campesina (2024). In 2022, she produced her firstdocumentary “Negrura”, showcasing Afro-Latinx stories in topics around colorism and discrimination within our own communities.

In recent years, she’s had the honor of receiving recognitions such as the Quincy Jones Award, ambassador for the Puerto Rican Day Parade in NYC, the Brother Thomas Fellowship, the Whippoorwill Arts Fellowship, and the ASCAP Foundation Lucille and Jack Yellen Award 2022. She was also nominated for a Children’s and Family Emmy in the category of Outstanding Interactive Media and won the “Latin Artist of the Year 2023” by the Boston Music Awards. Her music is featured on the film Beautiful, FL (Disney+), on the tv shows Alma’s Way, Work It Out Wombats (PBS Kids), and Mecha Builders (HBO Max), as well as indie films, jingles, and TV commercials.

Join us for an info session on the M.A. in Policy Analytics, a program built for future change-makers, whether you come from a background in economics, public health, political science, sociology, or something entirely different. You'll learn how the program blends analytical skills with real-world policy training, hear what faculty and students have to say, and get a clear picture of career paths in government, nonprofits, research, and beyond. No advanced data experience required, just curiosity and a drive to make a difference.

Dr. Stefanie Kasparek is the program director for the Master of Arts in Policy Analytics and an Assistant Professor of Data Science. She received her Ph.D. in Political Science from Temple University, Philadelphia. Specializing in the behavior and impact of international organizations and state actors, her scholarship applies quantitative tools to investigate patterns in global cooperation, conflict resolution, international development, and policy diffusion. Working in a data science position lets her bridge perspectives on global affairs with advanced analytical methods. She is a recipient of the Box-Steffensmeier Scholarship for Women in Quantitative Research and was selected to participate in the Empirical Implications of Theoretical Models (EITM) summer institute. With a focus on real-world impact, her research informs both academic debates and policy discussions, contributing to evidence-based solutions in global governance. Dr. Kasparek holds the E-nnovation Endowed Professorship in Data Science at Goucher College.

This webinar, Goucher Environmental Dialogues: Citizen Science for a Changing Planet, is on Wednesday, November 18, from noon to 1 p.m. ET. In this hands-on, webinar-based workshop, Peggy Eppig introduces participants to citizen and community-based science as a powerful tool for environmental monitoring and stewardship, exploring how everyday observers contribute meaningful data to research on biodiversity, water quality, climate, and more. Attendees will learn how to find and join citizen science projects, use accessible tools and apps to collect reliable field data, and understand how their contributions contribute to real scientific outcomes and policy decisions.

Peggy Eppig is a lecturer for Goucher College’s Environmental Studies Department and MA in Environmental Sustainability & Management program. She earned her PhD at Antioch University New England, NH, with an emphasis on 20th-century agricultural and conservation history. She serves as ranger-educator and project coordinator for the Lancaster Conservancy, where she applies ecology and landscape history to her work in ecological restoration and public education. Her research includes ecological pilgrimage studies and 20th-century conservation history. She is a long-distance hiker and expeditionary educator with experience in outdoor education, backcountry guiding, and natural history field schools.
