Ungar AthenaeumCelebrating the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth, Baltimore artist Lauren Frances Adams and historian Dr. Victoria Rose Pass share their collaborative exhibit as Library Artists-in-Residence in the Goucher College Library's Jane Austen Collection.

The collection, largely assembled and donated by alumna Alberta Burke '28, includes materials based on immersion, translation, adaptation, and iteration of Jane Austen's novels and time period. The exhibit explores themes that scholars, adaptors, and readers alike have brought to Austen in recent years, such as labor, colonialism, and queer identity and includes themes that Burke identified in her own collecting: landscape, fashion, and women’s handcrafts. Adams and Pass combine the themes with the methodologies of scrapbooking, needlework, and quilting, which have historically been marginalized as unserious women’s work, and they use them as a way of thinking through what is meaningful to us about Austen’s work and Burke’s collection.

Lauren Frances Adams is an artist who explores power structures through paintings that incorporate historical decorative motifs. Victoria Rose Pass is a scholar whose work examines the intersection of race and gender in fashion history in the twentieth century. They are both faculty members at The Maryland Institute College of Art.

Melanie Lytle is the director of the M.A. in Cultural Leadership and Management at Goucher College, where she also serves as Assistant Professor of Practice and director of the M.A. in Historic Preservation. An alumna of Goucher’s graduate program, her career has focused on the intersection of cultural heritage, nonprofit leadership, public policy, and community engagement. Her professional background includes work as a heritage consultant and in senior leadership roles within nonprofit and advocacy organizations. She is also the owner of a mission-driven craft restoration business, bringing an applied, entrepreneurial perspective to cultural leadership, organizational management, and ethical decision-making. Melanie is a longtime board member of Restoration Works International and has worked with the organization in Nepal, India, and the United States.

Originally from Annapolis, Amy is the proud parent of a twice-exceptional 13-year-old son, which deepens her commitment to supporting students with unique learning needs. Her passion lies in helping students with challenging behaviors reach their fullest potential through understanding, structure, and compassion.

Kaylee Fellner recently completed her undergraduate degree at Goucher College. She has spent one year in Goucher’s 4+1 program, focusing on Elementary Special Education. She has a strong passion for special education and teaching and hopes to enter the classroom this fall. Kaylee has spent the past five summers as the division head of an inclusion program in New England, which is a particular passion of hers. She sees herself pursuing a career with similar responsibilities throughout the year. She will enter the graduate program for a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) in Elementary Special Education in summer 2026 and has already completed several graduate-level courses in the program.

Mckenna Bruce is an alumna of the Master of Education program in Athletic Program Leadership and Administration. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Sport Management, with a minor in Communication, from Wittenberg University. Originally from Athens, Ohio, Mckenna developed a passion for sports at an early age and pursued a career in the field. She served for two years at Goucher College as a Graduate Assistant in Athletic Communications and spent an additional year coaching the throws program for the Goucher Track & Field team.

In this talk, Alia — a literary agent who specializes in nonfiction — will show some paths to publishing memoir based on the real careers of her clients. In this webinar, Elizabeth Hessami will share insights from her research on the environmental impacts of armed conflict and legal efforts to protect the environment before, during, and after conflict.

Elizabeth B. Hessami, J.D., LL.M. (Environmental Law) is a Faculty Lecturer for Johns Hopkins University, where she teaches Environmental Security, Public Lands and Private Interests, and International Environmental Law and Policy. Her primary area of research has been the impact of armed conflict on the environment with a focus on Afghanistan and Ukraine. She is a member of the Washington, D.C. and U.S. Supreme Court Bars, and Co-Chair of the Law Interest Group for the Environmental Peacebuilding Association. She is also a member of the IUCN-World Commission on Environmental Law.
