A Day With Sue and Martyn Dell of the Jane Austen’s House Museum in Chawton, England
Sue Dell is the chief collections volunteer at Jane Austen’s House Museum, Martyn Dell is a trustee of the Jane Austen Memorial Trust.
11 a.m. – noon: “A Year in the Life of Jane Austen’s House.” Jane Austen lived in the cottage at Chawton from 1809 until shortly before her death in 1817, and it was in that house that she completed all her novels. Trustee Martyn Dell will provide an insider’s view of "the most treasured Austen site in the world."
Noon – 1:30 p.m.: Lunch on your own. You can “brown bag” it with a picnic on the lovely Goucher campus, visit the Mary Fisher dining hall adjacent to the Athenaeum, or check out one of the many nearby restaurants.
1:30 p.m. – 3 p.m.: Workshop on English paper piecing in the Batza Room. A materials fee of $10 (cash or check) will be collected that day. Please bring a pair of sharp scissors. Sue Dell is the expert on the patchwork coverlet Jane Austen, her mother, and her sister created. In this workshop she will teach the technique used to create that coverlet.
