Blake de Maria, Harold and Edythe Toso Chair of Art History at Santa Clara University, will explore Venice’s pivotal role in establishing a global gemstone market, the contribution of the Venetian gem market to the dissemination of knowledge about precious stones, and how these commercial and intellectual developments shaped images of gems and jewelry in 16th- and 17th-century painting.
