#film_screening_miss_representation_feat_guest_speaker_jamia_wilsonDebuted at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, Miss Representation is an invaluable documentary that sheds light on exactly how the mainstream media contributes to the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America.
Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, Miss Representation takes a refreshing approach to unpacking the media-constructed collective message that a ‘woman’s value and power lie in her youth, beauty, and sexuality, and not in her capacity as a leader.’ Featuring interviews with people ranging from Condoleezza Rice to Rachel Maddow, Miss Representation challenges the media’s limited portrayal of women.
In addition to the screening, Goucher’s FMLA is honored to invite Jamia Wilson, Vice President of Programs at the Women’s Media Center (WMC) to speak on the various issues raised in the film. Join us in hearing from this esteemed speaker and viewing this enlightening, call-to-action film, as Miss Representation comes to Goucher for the first time.
