The Irwin C. Schroedl, Jr. Lecture in Decorative Arts and Material Culture

Dr. Jerry Philogene, Associate Professor in the American Studies, Dickinson College

"Freedom Epistemologies in Contemporary Haitian Art: The Work of Mrylande Constant and Naudline Pierre"

Professor Jerry Philogene will discuss the work of Myrlande Constant and Naudline Pierre, two contemporary artists of Haitian descent whose creative work imagines other ways of being in this world. Professor Philogene’s exploration of their works will reveal the ways in which cultural identities and spiritual beliefs are articulated through an exploration of personal and historical narratives of human experience. For Constant and Pierre, these experiences express universal struggles for belonging and freedom and offer the promise of liberation.
