Magical Pop-ups like Sculptures

The distinguished UK pop-up book artist, Paul Johnson, makes carousel pop-up books in brilliant colours that have no folds but are joined with hundreds of dovetail units and embellished with astonishing sculptural covers and a spine. He will share his construction methods with you at this informal drop-in session and demonstrate ways of making pop-ups books that are both innovative and appealing.

Book Studies students and faculty will be available to tell you more about the program.

7:30 pm The Baltimore Bibliophiles presents a public lecture.  Guests and future members are very welcome. Batza Room

The Pop-up World of Paul Johnson

We are privileged to welcome Paul Johnson – one of the UK’s most distinguished pop-up book artists – as part of his 2014 workshop tour of the USA. His work has changed dramatically since his last talk in Baltimore. He now makes carousel pop-up books with hundreds of dovetail joined units that can be dismantled and re-assembled. The three-dimensional covers are joined with piano hinges to an elaborate sculptural spine – some extend to over three feet tall! In this presentation he will assemble at least one of them from the flat pack state and others will be seen already assembled.

Reservations appreciated; please contact Randi Kennedy at Randalynn.kennedy@goucher.edu or 410-337-6362.
